Hawksbill Sea Turtle

Hawksbill sea turtles are medium-sized compared to other sea turtles. They typically grow to about 70 to 90 centimeters (28 to 35 inches) in length and weigh between 50 to 80 kilograms (110 to 175 pounds), although some individuals can grow larger. The hawksbill's shell is one of its most distinctive features. It is overlapping and scaly, with sharp, pointed scutes (the individual segments of the shell). The shell is beautifully patterned in shades of amber, brown, and black, with yellow or orange hues. These vibrant patterns make hawksbill shells highly valued, historically leading to the illegal trade in turtle shells. The hawksbill is named for its narrow, hooked beak, which resembles a hawk’s bill. This beak is specialized for feeding on sponges, which are a primary food source for hawksbills.Like other sea turtles, hawksbills have strong, paddle-like flippers that allow them to navigate efficiently through water. Their flippers are well-adapted for both swimming and maneuvering in coral reefs.Hawksbill sea turtles are found primarily in tropical and subtropical oceans.
