Sea Turtles in Sri Lanka

There are five varieties of Sea Turtles found in Sri Lanka, namely Olive Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherhead Turtle. The all major nesting habitats are located in the Galle District.

Our guide was very informed on the history of each turtle and explained in depth why they were there and what exactly had been done to help them. They clearly care about turtles and are trying to do something to help. Yes, the tanks are small for the injured turtles but put into perspective, at least they are caring for them. I am sure the facilities will improve in time. We paid 3000 LKR for a family of 3 and we released two turtles into the sea. The facility is small and the whole visit took an hour. I hope and trust this not-for-profit continues to grow and develop over time. image

  • imageYou can pay a bit more 1500 rupees to release baby turtles into the Indian ocean. Quite emotional and 10 minutes walk from the koggala beach hotel. It is a must do.y image

  • imageOur hired driver took us here, but were not disappointed! The guide had a really nice presentation, you could see that he loves the turtles because he knew so much about them. He gave us several turtles to hold. Our admission ticket included a release of a small turtle into the sea, and that was an amazing feeling! To see how they are running as fast as they can to reach the sea it is pretty nice! image

  • imageA very small place with around 10-12 pools with various types of turtles. Some are awaiting return to the sea after treatment, others been rescued following injuries. Also have a hatchery and for an extra 1000 rupees you can release one to sea. Guides show you round and pass on their knowledge, tip expected!! image
